Discover the world of quarks and leptons with data from the LHC

This year marks the seventeenth edition of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group's (IPPOG) Masterclass in Particle Physics. Every year, around 14,000 students from over 50 countries come to one of 200 universities and research centres to explore the world of elementary particles. In Switzerland, under the patronage of the Swiss Institute for Particle Physics (CHIPP), the Universities of Bern, Geneva and Zurich (together with ETHZ) and EPFL regularly offer interested students the opportunity to take part in Geneva or Lausanne (in French), or in Bern or Zurich (in German).

The Masterclass is aimed at high-school students in their 10th to 12th school year, preferably with a science profile or otherwise very interested in physics. Participants learn what happens at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), 100 metres underground at the European Research Laboratory for Particle Physics CERN. At the LHC, a ring accelerator with a circumference of 27 kilometres, the large detectors ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb are installed. IN the masterclasses an introduction to the world of elementary particle physics, the large accelerators and the detectors is followed by the evaluation of data measured by the experiments. The students analyse individual particle collisions on the screen to do a classification and statistical analysis. Parallel to this, other classes around the world will also carry out similar activities.

Unfortunately, planning is not yet possible this year, as the universities are only open to students and staff at the moment. However, we will offer activities in late summer or autumn if somehow possible. We will inform you at a later date and will publish it on this website.
